How do I set-up multi-factor authentication for my CUNY login?
In June 2025, CUNY implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) in CUNY Login, the university's single sign-on (SSO) system. This affects patron access to OneSearch and library e-resources, major CUNY systems (such as CUNYfirst, Brightspace, Zoom, and so on), and any service using CUNY Login.
Please note the following:
- CUNY Login MFA requires Microsoft Authenticator (no SMS option in the current documentation)
- This affects library patron access to e-resources
- The setup process is separate from other campus MFA systems
. If you are already have Microsoft 365 MFA set up, you will have two MFA methods within Microsoft Authenticator:
- One that shows popup notifications with 2-digit codes (Microsoft 365)
- One that displays rotating 6-digit TOTP codes (CUNY Login MFA)
So while it’s the same app, patrons will need to set up this additional CUNY-specific account.
