How do I get Wi-Fi access with Eduroam?

What is eduroam?

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.  Eduroam allows students, faculty and staff to use their CUNY Login credentials to connect to the internet from an eduroam Wi-Fi hotspot anywhere in the world, including CUNY campuses and libraries. Visitors from other institutions participating in eduroam will be able to access the internet through CUNY eduroam Wi-Fi hotspots as well.

Connecting to eduroam

By following this one-time procedure for your device, you ensure that your CUNY Login credentials are secure when connecting to the internet through ANY eduroam Wi-Fi hotspot. Note that any other approach to set up your device’s eduroam wireless connection is not recommended, may not be secure, and makes it harder to troubleshoot connection issue.

  1. Use an existing wireless connection to open cat.eduroam.org in a web browser on your device.
  2. Click on Click here to download your eduroam® installer.
  3. Search for and select City University of New York.
  4. Confirm that the “Download your installer” line includes your device type or operating system, then click on the eduroam button.
    • If your device or operating system is not in the “Download your installer” line, eduroam may not support a secure internet connection for your device.
  5. Follow the download and installation instructions, including any prompts to download and install an app or file for your device (geteduroam app for Android) or to open a URL (for Chromebook).
  6. For Chromebooks, select Default for the Server CA Certificate field.
  7. Enter your CUNY Login credentials when prompted for user identity and password.
  8. Join or connect to eduroam.

Detailed, device-specific instructions are available in CUNY IT Help.

Troubleshooting

Invalid user credentials

If CUNY student, faculty or staff, they could try accessing managelogin.cuny.edu using another device to confirm CUNY Login credentials or reset password. Otherwise, they should contact their college help desk for help.

If a CUNY guest, they should contact their home institution or organization for help.

No eduroam SSID in wireless network connections

Confirm whether eduroam is listed and accessible on another wireless device.

  • If eduroam is not available, contact college help desk or networking team.
  • If eduroam is available but not listed in the user’s wireless connection, they could retry switching wireless on and off and restarting their device, but it may be a device issue.

No internet access after connecting to eduroam

Contact college help desk or networking team.

“Why must I use the CAT and not simply connect to eduroam?"

CUNY wants its students, faculty and staff to perform a one-time, eduroam connection using the configuration assistant tool (CAT) to ensure their CUNY Login credentials remain secure when connecting to an eduroam Wi-Fi hotspot anywhere in the world. Using the CAT will also make it easier to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection issues.
